Calling All SVEA Members!

We need YOUR help designing activities for Outreach to Teach!

This year, we will be at College Park Elementary in Virginia Beach from 11:30AM to 3:00PM on March 18th. In order to invite increased participation and ownership of our Outreach to Teach event, we are asking SVEA members from all across the state to submit task proposals. A task is a 10-minute, educational (but fun!) activity that fourth and fifth graders will complete in groups of six.

If you have a great idea for a task, please fill out this Task Proposal Form, including the Task Planning Template, and e-mail it to VP Katelyn Anderson at kande046@odu.edu by February 1st. Task leaders will be notified by February 15th if their task has been chosen for implementation! Feel free to e-mail Katelyn if you have any questions!

Candidate for President

Coty L. Frye

My name Is Coty Frye. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English and a minor in Psychology. My focus is in Secondary Education. I want to teach Middle School English, Language Arts. I am actively involved in my university chapter of SVEA @ VCU. I currently serve as the Co-Chair of my SVEA chapter’s Social Committee. In that capacity, I along with a fellow member work to get social, and Professional Development events together to help recruit members and keep our chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University, up and running. I would be honored to serve as your state SVEA President, as I will always put members at the forefront of everything I do to make the Student Virginia Education Association, and the Virginia Education Association the best it can be! I will be your voice, and advocate for our profession and OUR FUTURE STUDENTS. I will make sure that as an association we continue to Put Kids First, because our future students are more than test scores. Learning needs to be student centered and not data-driven because our students come from culturally-diverse backgrounds and a “One-Size Fits-All” approach does NOT work. Our instruction needs to be effective and as unique as our FUTURE STUDENTS are and will be.

Candidate for Vice-President

Yancey "Catie" Kruger

Yancey “Catie” Kruger is a sophomore at Radford University studying Elementary Education. She currently serves as the underclassman member at large for the state board and as her local chapter’s historian. This spring she was given the opportunity to participate in the National Education Association’s Student Organizing Fellowship. As a member of SVEA she has loved getting to meet other pre service professionals, she was able to attend VEA lobby day to speak to officials about current issues in education, and develop as an educator. If elected, Catie hopes to continue establishing and growing connections with other pre service educators and grow SVEA’s membership across the state.

Candidates for SVEA President

Coty L. Frye
Greetings SVEA,

My name is Coty Frye, and I am your current SVEA President. I am honored to be running for re-election as your SVEA President.  This leadership position has afforded me the opportunity to grow and learn as a future educator.  I would love the opportunity to represent the SVEA as your president, for a second term.  I am currently a senior at The Virginia State University, “Hail State, Hail” I’m an English major with a minor in Secondary Education (6-12). I will continue to put members at the forefront of everything that I do to ensure that the Student Virginia Education Association the best that it can be. I will continue to be your advocate, and put kids and OUR profession, FIRST! I will be your voice because our profession makes all other professions possible. I will make sure that as an association we continue to “Put Kids First”. Learning needs to be student centered and not data-driven because all   our students come from culturally-diverse backgrounds and a “One-Size Fits-All” approach does NOT work.  We need to meet our future students where they are, not where we want them to be. Our instruction needs to be effective and as unique as our FUTURE STUDENTS are and will be.

Public Education is facing one of its most difficult times with the appointment of Ms. Betsy Devos. I reaffirm my commitment to you the members of SVEA, that I will advocate for YOU the members, our association, and our profession. “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself”. John Dewy

Catie Kruger

Hello all! I am Catie Kruger and I am super excited to be running for SVEA President this year. I am currently a junior at Old Dominion University studying Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Elementary and Primary education. This is my second year on the SVEA board, and I am currently serving as Vice President. Prior to that, I served as Underclassmen member at large. Before coming to ODU this spring, I attended Radford University where I served as Historian for the 2015-2016 year and Underclassmen Rep for the 2014-2015 year. In the spring of 2016 I was lucky enough to be a part of the NEA Student Organizing fellowship, where I learned all about the NEA Student Programs. In my two years on the board, I have attended VEA Lobby Day twice, where I got to speak with Virginia legislators about real issues in public education today. I also have attended both the VEA Delegate Assembly, a Virginia Board of Education meeting and Reggie Smith Organizing School this past year. I am so lucky to have all of these amazing opportunities, and if elected, my goal is to bring even more opportunities to you. Next year, in addition to being my senior year, it is my last year before student teaching in grad school so I will be able to be completely available to you, and your needs because together we can make a difference.

Candidates for SVEA Vice-President

Riley Moran

My name is Riley Moran and I am an Elementary Education Major at Old Dominion University. I have been an active member of the SVEA for two years now and am looking to further my participation by running for Vice President. This past year, I acted as the Vice President of the ODU chapter and the Eastern Region Representative. Through these positions, I have interacted with many of you, heard your voices and have done everything in my power to improve your experiences with the SVEA. I have worked on the state board for a year and have had many ideas along the way that I was unable to act upon in my position as region rep. I would like to send out a monthly state newsletter, improve communication between the board and members, create activities for a week long diversity awareness week in February, and offer the opportunity for chapters to work together and share ideas all year long instead of just two days every March. I believe the SVEA should be a community where members are free to ask questions, bounce ideas off of each other and be inspired by each other’s successes.

Amber Collins
My name is Amber Collins. I am a junior at Virginia State University. I am an Interdisciplinary Studies major with a minor in Elementary Education. I am the current Secretary of the State SVEA board as well as an active member in my local chapter. I, along with some of my peers, recently began a mentoring program for young girls at a local elementary school. I am also a math tutor for local middle school students and tutor for my peers to prepare them for the Praxis Core test. I am passionate about teaching and helping make the future of students bright. I would be honored to be your Vice President and work with everybody to enrich the lives of students. It is important for us all to work together to aid our public schools and their students ad I look forward to the opportunity.

Welcome Future Teachers

The teachers of Virginia, members of the Virginia Education Association, are eager to welcome you to the profession. We know that you are working hard to complete your degree, and we want to help.

That's why we support the Student Virginia Education Association (SVEA), a pre-professional organization that will guide you into our challenging world of teaching.

Joining Student VEA opens doors to you with our local associations in every school division in Virginia. Those local associations are professional communities that will give you support and guidance during your student teaching. And when you land your first teaching job, VEA's local associations will help you throughout your career -- especially during your early years as a new teacher.

Who is eligible to join?

Student membership is available if you are enrolled in a post-secondary program that is preparatory for employment in a position that will make you eligible for Active (teacher) membership in the VEA-NEA. Student membership is available to those who are NOT currently under contract with a school division in Virginia.

Why should I join?

As a student member of VEA-NEA, you'll have the nation's largest education association (3.2 million members) working to provide you with tools and resources for a successful career.

How much does it cost to join?

Annual dues are $30, plus your local chapter dues. Why so low? Because VEA-NEA members supplement the cost of the program to help you along your path to teaching.

I don't live in the same state as my college/university. Which state should I join?

You join the state where you are enrolled as a college student (i.e., if you live in West Virginia, but attend school in Virginia, you become a Virginia member).

Am I covered by liability insurance as soon as I sign up online?

Yes! Coverage is immediate.

How do I join?

Check with your local chapter president for a membership form, or click here to join online.

Candidate for SVEA President
Catie Kruger

Hello All! I am Catie Kruger and I am a aspiring English educator at Old Dominion University. I have served on the SVEA Board of Directors for three years as the Underclassman Member at Large, Vice President and President. During my time in SVEA, I have attended the NEA Student Leadership Conference twice, the NEA Representative Assembly once, the NEA Minority and Women Leadership Training conference, as well as numerous amazing events at the state and local levels. Last year I served as a judge at the Educators Rising Conference and will be returning this year. This year at Old Dominion I also serve as the Grant Coordinator and worked hard to receive a NEA CREATE grant for a Read Across America Event. Prior to ODU. These amazing opportunities have been awarded to me due to SVEA and I hope to bring more opportunities to you across the state. My goal is to be as accessible to each of you as possible as we learn and grow together. As aspiring educators, we are at the forefront of issues in Education and people want to hear our voice. If elected my goal is to increase the dialogue from the state level to the local level as well as increase conversations from chapter to chapter. I would love to talk with you and share ideas on what you need from your association because I know that together we can make a difference. That is why I humbly ask for your vote for re-election this March.

Candidate for SVEA Vice-President
Morgan Brown

Hello SVEA members, my name is Morgan Brown.  I am running for the position of Vice President.  I am a senior at Old Dominion University from the Richmond area and my major is Elementary Education. Being a student member of the Student Virginia Education Association for the past two years has been very rewarding and I have loved every minute of it! As a SVEA member, I have been active on the local, state, and national levels. Currently, I am on the SVEA Board of Directors as the Eastern Region Representative. Also, to my credit, I have served as Treasurer of the ODU SVEA Chapter. Presently, I am the Vice President of the ODU chapter. While at ODU, I have planned many activities that help shape our members become the best educators as possible. On the state level, I am the student representative on the Communication Committee and attended Lobby Day in Richmond, VA. This past summer I was fortunate enough to attend the Student Leadership Conference in Boston, MA. This conference awarded me the opportunity to form relationships with not only student members from across the country, but with VEA and NEA members. It is my goal to continue to represent SVEA well wherever it leads me and make certain our voices are heard.
